Fausto Zonaro

Fausto Zonaro - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Venice 1854–1929 San Remo)
Sunset over Maçka on the Bosporus, signed F. Zonaro, oil on canvas, 22 x 40 cm, framed, (GG)

We are grateful to Erol Makzume who confirmed the authenticity on the basis of the original.

Provenance:
European Private Collection.

Fausto Zonaro moved to Istanbul at the age of thirty-seven with his wife to be, Elisabetta. The couple married there and settled in a house on the northern bank of the Golden Horn.
Describing Constantinople as heaven on earth, the artist was taken with the city. He painted the daily life of its people, architecture and numerous views of the Bosphorus, such as the present lot.

Adjacent to the hillside known as Stones (Taşlik), this historical area, virtually desolate during the 19th century, is today one of the most highly-developed and popular neighbourhoods in Istanbul. The pastel colours depicting the sunset lend to an air of melancholy and gloom.
