Josef Orient

Josef Orient - Selected by Hohenlohe

(Feketeváros 1677–1747 Vienna) Vast river landscape, oil on panel, 33.4 x 48 cm, framed

A comparable landscape by Orient, signed and dated 1717, was auctioned at Sotheby’s, London, in 1979, and another mountain landscape was sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 12 June 2001 (lot 76).
Orient (recte: Urindt) was born in Hungary and became a student of Anton Faistenberger. Later on he became deputy director of the Viennese Academy. One of his students was Franz Christoph Janneck. Orient’s landscapes reveal the influence of Netherlandish artists from the 17th century, such as Jan Griffier I.
