Lotto No. 50

Juriaen Jacobsz.

(Hamburg 1625–1685 Leuven) A landscape with two riders, a hunter with hounds and his quarry, signed and dated lower left: Jacob (.) fec 1647, oil on canvas, 132 x 160 cm, framed

Juriaen Jacobsz. painted landscapes, hunting scenes, still lifes, and portraits. His focus was nevertheless on hunting scenes, which betray Frans Snyders’s influence. Most of his large hunting compositions date from the years between 1659 and 1679, although examples from an earlier period are also known. The present painting, dated to 1647, blends in with these early juvenile works on grounds of both its style and subject.
