Archduchess Maria Anna was the younger daughter of Emperor Charles VI and Princess Elizabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Hence she was Empress Maria Theresa’s sister. In 1744 she married Prince Charles of Lorraine, a younger brother of her brother-in-law Emperor Francis I Stephen. The couple were appointed governors of the Spanish Netherlands and had their seat in Brussels. The young archduchess died only a few months after her wedding.
