Robert Russ

Robert Russ - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Vienna 1847–1922)
The Passauerhof in Stein an der Donau, signed Robert Russ,
oil on canvas laid down on board, 98 x 73.5 cm, framed (Rei)

Robert Russ was the oldest son of the painter Franz Russ and the brother of the painter Franz Seraph Russ. Aged just 14, he was given the chance to attend the landscape class run by Albert Zimmerman at the Viennese Academy. Eugen Jettl, Emil Jakob Schindler and Rudolf Ribarz were studying there at the same time. He primarily drew inspiration for his images from the areas around Vienna, the Alps, South Tyrol and Italy. Even when he was a boy, he recognised the beauty of the Wachau region as a source of inspiration. He was an important representative of “Stimmungsimpressionismus” (Austrian “mood” impressionism), which sets the Viennese painter apart as he captured lighting conditions that create an attractive atmosphere. This is reflected in this image, depicting the Passauerhof in the small town of Stein an der Donau. Here the artist depicts the atmosphere of the inner courtyard in summer, flooded with light, in a number of versions, accomplishing this with a characteristic application of colour, great skill and sensitivity.
