(Antwerp 1564–1635)
A mountainous landscape with a horseman and travellers on a path, with a village in the background,
oil on panel, 58 x 66 cm, framed
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting. A written certificate is available (21 January 2016).
Klaus Ertz writes: ‘The explicit painterly treatment of the rocks and the streaky brushwork in the paths and in the sky suggest that the painting dates from the artist’s late period and was made towards the end of the 1620s. In his late work, Joss de Momper repeatedly referred to compositional inventions from earlier periods; yet in contrast to his early rocky landscapes, the later ones are much more painterly: a piece of rock singled out would no longer be recognised as such, but has become an intrinsic part of the composition and is inextricably tied to it. ’
