Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel I maintained an intensive and successful collaboration. Ertz believes that they produced over 80 paintings during a period of more than thirty years. Such a regular teaming-up of two significant painters was even unusual for Flanders at the time.
The present painting seems to have been executed around 1618/19; some of the best examples of the artists’ collaboration date from this period. Both artists had a very individual style and stuck to certain types of motifs that collectors associated with. The combination of their respective talents resulted in unparalleled landscape paintings meeting the taste of the contemporary art market.
