Lotto No. 1277

Charlotte Piepenhagen-Mohr

Charlotte Piepenhagen-Mohr - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Prague 1828–1902)
Winter Landscape with Figures Gathering Wood, signed (partly overwritten), Ch. M. Piepenhagen, oil on canvas, 48.5 x 70 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
Private collection Danmark.

Charlotte Piepenhagen inherited from her father not only a talent for painting but also technical aids in the form of small templates which August Piepenhagen (1791–1868) used in the composition of his works. She continued with this practice, as is evident in this wonderful work dating from the 1880s. The painting’s composition is based on two of her father’s small oil studies, Marsh in Winter (National Gallery in Prague, O986) and Woodland path in Winter (National Gallery in Prague, O998). While Charlotte adopted the first sketch in its entirety, she partially adapted the second with the addition of her own figures. The number of known works by Charlotte Piepenhagen is not large, although we do know from historical sources that her works were often exhibited in Vienna and Prague. There is no doubt that the present lot is not only one of her finest and most artistically valuable works but that, even if other works by Charlotte Piepenhagen are discovered in the future, its painterly quality classifies it as absolutely outstanding.

We are grateful to Dr. Michal Simek for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
