Raphael von Ambros was a pupil of Hans Makart at the Vienna Academy and became known far beyond the city’s borders for his allegories and portraits. He was the oldest son of the composer and Oberstaatsanwalt-Substituts August Wilhelm Ambros (1816–1876). His works were also exhibited at the Paris Salon.
Ambros was elevated to the Austrian nobility in 1878.
