Hugo Darnaut, an Austrian Mood Impressionist, was the son of court actor Michael Fix and spent his childhood in Graz. He trained as a theatrical scenery painter under court theatre scenery painter Heinrich Burghart in Vienna, and then studied at the Vienna Academy under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (1833–1913). He then studied with a scholarship at the former centre for landscape painting in Düsseldorf under Andreas Achenbach, Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann. In 1877 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. After Schindler’s death he taught many students in Schloss Plankenberg, and in Maria Anzbach from 1912 onwards.
