Carl Hummel was first a pupil of Friedrich Preller in Weimar from 1834 to 1842. With him, he travelled to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Rügen and Tyrol. Between 1842 and 1846 he stayed in Italy and Sicily before settling down in Weimar, where he became a Professor at the Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School. His oil paintings and watercolors, often depicting Tyrolean and Italian alps, are characterized by a sensibility for nature and by romantic compositions.
