Thomas Ender combined his artistic skills with a scientific interest in topographic facts. “First he made his watercolours. From the beginning they were intended for transfer, rich in detail, delicate in the values of tone and more linear than painterly.” (Thomas Ender verband sein künstlerisches Können in der Landschaftsmalerei mit einem wissenschaftlichen Interesse an topografischen Gegebenheiten. "Es entstanden zuerst Aquarelle. Sie waren offenbar schon auf die Übertragung hin angelegt, detailreich, fein in den Tonwerten abgestuft und eher linear als malerisch." Walter Koschatzky, Thomas Ender, Graz 1982, p. 46).
