Lotto No. 76

After Giuseppe Bottani

After Giuseppe Bottani - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(1717-1784) Allegory of the arts and of commerce, c. 1770, inscribed "Ioseph Bottani pinx. / Ioseph Cantarini delineav." at lower margin, black chalk on laid paper, watermark "escutcheon and grape", 51 x 34 cm (depiction), 53,5 x 35,5 cm (dimensions of sheet), unmounted, unframed, (Sch)

The drawing is related to an engraving after the painting by Giuseppe Bottani "Allegoria delle Arti e dei Commerci risollevati da Maria Teresa" (1770), which today is preserved in the Fondazione Banca Agricola Mantovana. Contrary to the painting the drawing shows a dedication inscription in Latin in the medallion of Maria Theresa which gives evidence that the Empress was the founder of the Academy. According to her wish Giuseppe Bottani was appointed teacher for painting and director of the newly founded Academy in 1769. He ended his career in Mantua where he spent the last 15 years of his life. Literature: comp. C. Tellini Perina, Giuseppe Bottani (Cremona 1717- Mantova 1784): catalogo delle opere, Milan 2000.
