During the last decade of his life Francesco Hayez completely abandoned history painting to dedicate himself to portraits and intimate subjects such as the present lot.
Hayez’ treatment of the subject is impressive in its beauty. The sitter is portrayed nude and depicted with modesty.
This composition, “studio di giovane modella in riposo”, is very similar to another version of the same subject, “studio di nudo”, held by the Brera Academy (F.Mazzocca, Francesco Hayez, catalogo ragionato, no. 402, p. 366). Both can be dated to circa 1870–1875.
This exquisite representation of a female nude belongs to an important series of paintings that Hayez completed during the final decade of his life.
