Franz Ittenbach was closely connected with the family of the Count and Baron of Fürstenberg. Together with Ernst Deger, Andreas and Karl Müller, he painted the pilgrimmage church of St. Apollinaris at Remagen on the Rhine for the Count of Fürstenberg-Stammheim in the 1840s, the “most excellent epic work of Düsseldorf religious painting” (Allgemeines Lexikon der Bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, herausgegeben von Ulrich Thieme, Felix Becker, E. A. Seeman Verlag, Leipzig 1926, S. 273-274).
