After his studies at the Vienna Academy Joseph Nigg worked for the Vienna porcelain manufactory from 1800 to 1848. Beginning as a painter, he rose to become the head artist and then trainer. In addition to porcelain painting and oil painting, he also executed watercolours and pastels. With his depicts of fauna and flora so true to nature, Nigg, one of the most important representatives of Biedermeier flower painting, continued in the tradition of his Dutch predecessors. In this bouquet alone we see roses, stock-roses, lilacs, delphiniums and phlox, a cactus flower in the foreground.
