Amadeo Preziosi
(Malta 1816–1882 Yesilköy)
View of Bursa, signed, dated Preziosi, Juin 22.1864, inscribed on the reverse “Souvenir de Brousse”, watercolour on paper, 32 x 47 cm, framed, (GG).
Provenance:
Gift from the artist to the Austrian Consul to Istanbul, the uncle of the current owner; thence by descent;
European private collection.
Amadeo Preziosi has unusually chosen to depict a panoramic view of Bursa rather than Istanbul from across the Golden Horn. He is indeed best remembered for his views of Istanbul and representations of the daily life of its people, including street sellers, the coffee houses and the market places. Amadeo Preziosi came from one of the foremost families of the Maltese nobility. He was educated by private tutors, and his passion for drawing began as a child. Instead of following the legal career his father had envisaged for him, he studied at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. He left Malta in 1842, traveling first to Italy and then to Istanbul where he stayed until his death forty years later. Here he established a flourishing studio, selling views of Istanbul to European visitors.
