Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek moved to Middelburg around 1800 where he attended the local academy. He predominantly painted view of rivers and harbours, as well as storms at seas, particularly with shipwrecks and people in distress. Koekkoek also built model ships, and his paintings were famous for the precision with which they depicted different ship types.
