Rudolph Friedrich Suhrlandt

Rudolph Friedrich Suhrlandt - Dipinti del XIX secolo

(Ludwigslust 1781–1862 Schwerin)
View from the Vineyards over the Bay of Naples, signed, dated, R, Suhrlandt 1840, oil on canvas, 106 x 144 cm, framed, (Rei)

Rudolph Friedrich Surhlandt was the son of Mecklenburg’s court painter Johann Heinrich. He attended the Dresden Academy before moving to Vienna in 1803 where he worked as a portraitist, primarily on behalf of the Russian and Polish aristocracy. Even as a student Suhrlandt was fascinated by Italy, often copying works by Correggio or Raffael. In 1808 he travelled to Rome where he stayed for several years, making contact with Canova, the local German artists and writers, as well as artists at the local French Academy. In 1812, on behalf of Joachim Murat, he travelled on to Naples where he lived until his return to Germany in 1816. In Ludwigslust Suhrlandt worked as court painter to Archduke Friedrich Franz and as a professor.
