Provenance: Collector’s mark Dr. Alfred Ritter von Wurzbach-Tanneberg (Lugt 2587) on the reverse; two adhesive labels numbered 614 (recto) and 14 (verso) on the mount.

The present drawing is related to the etching "Die säugende Hündin" (The Suckling Bitch) (WV-Nr. 398) of 1844. Already in 1838 Danhauser had been occupied with the same motif in a painting with the title "Der betrogene Pinsch" (The Cheated Pinsch) (WV-Nr. 228). The sheet may have been a preliminary drawing for the etching or a detail study for the painting.
