Carl (Cölestin) Schleicher

(Lviv 1825-1903 Padua) At her Toilette, signed C. Schleicher, oil on canvas, 90 x 115 cm, framed, (Rei)

According to most recent knowledge, the artist was named Cölestin Schleicher (and not, as falsely described in the literature, Carl). Cölestin Schleicher was born in Lviv, Galicia in 1825. He lived in Vienna and exhibited at Austria’s Kunstverein several times. An obituary published in the Neue Freie Presse dated 7. 10. 1903 states that he was a pupil of Waldmüller, was particularly known for his Dutch genre painting, and preferred painting character heads and Talmudic scholars in dispute. He died on 2 October, 1903 in Padua where he had spent his last years.
