Oesterley Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Oesterley took his Dr.phil. in 1824 at the University of Göttingen where he was later made a professor of art history. He received his education as a painter from J. Krauskopf in Cassel, and F. Mathäi in Dresden, Rome, Düsseldorf and Munich. In 1845 he was appointed court painter to the King of Hannover. In addition to portraits, historical and genre painting, Oesterley also executed etchings and lithographs. He also painted frescos such as those in the palace chapel in Hannover, and altarpieces.
