Alexander von Bensa
(Vienna 1820–1902)
The Battle of Königsgrätz, indistinctly signed A de Bensa,
oil on canvas, 74 x 132 cm, framed, (Rei)
Counterpart to lot 1284
Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna.
It is highly likely that these two paintings depict an episode that occurred during the Battle of Königsgrätz; namely, the well-known cavalry fight on the left Austrian flank at Stresewitz and Rosberitz-Langenhof. During the final phase of the battle, two Austrian cavalry regiments attacked one Prussian regiment, and almost overwhelmed the latter. Prussia was only saved by the involvement of Prussian infantry. However, the heavy losses suffered during the Austrian attack forced an orderly retreat across the Elbe, along with the Austrian artillery reserve of Benedek’s army, who had been holding their position.
