Anton Doll is a well-known landscape artist and exponent of the Munich School, an artistic circle established around the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In his youth Doll was apprenticed to the portraitist Franz Dahmen. His talent won him rapid acclaim, and he became a member of the Munich art association as early as 1852. His early work is principally composed of Munich cityscapes, but over the course of his career he would come to specialise in landscape painting. Winter village scenes would become his favourite and most widely known subject.
