The landscape artist Franz Wipplinger studied at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts. He left Vienna in 1846 and moved to Waidhofen, where he tragically drowned a year later in the river Ybbs.
The present painting dates back to the last year of his life, and is representative of his later work. His artistic interest was the beauty and diversity of the Austrian landscape, and he painted views of the Tyrol and South Tyrol, Styria, Salzburg and Bavaria as well as Upper and Lower Austria.
