Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth whose attribute is a cup, is shown in this painting in a reflective pose. As the cupbearer of the gods, she provides them with nectar and ambrosia, and has the ability to grant youth. Her parents are the god Zeus and the goddess Hera. Zeus is depicted in the guise of an eagle. The red toga stands out against the pale skin and dark background. Eduard Büchler here reveals his academically honed skills and his preference for history painting.
