Eduard Agricola received his first artistic education at the Berlin Academy, where he studied from 1818 until 1826. After his studies he lived in Salzburg until 1830. This was followed by study trips to Berlin and Munich although he preferred travelling to Naples and Rome. His earlier paintings were characterised by alpine landscapes, but these gave way to Italian ruins, seascapes, coastal scenes and waterfalls. In the 1840s, Agricola received numerous commissions from Prince Karl and Prince Albrecht of Prussia and settled again in Germany. During this period, he painted works depicting the landscapes of both southern and northern Germany.
