Stefanie Glax * - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(Rohitsch-Sauerbrunn/Slovenia 1876-1952 Milan)
A view from a balcony over the bay of Abbazia and to the Monte Maggiore/Ucka, signed St. Glax, watercolour on cardboard, 36 x 49 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)

The daughter of the balneologist Julius Glax, Stephanie Glax spent her first years of life in Bad Rohitsch-Sauerbrunn in Styria (today Slovenia). In 1885 the family moved to Abbazia, where the father was appointed a director of a spa. At first the family spent the winter months there and later on stayed all year round. Stephanie Glax received an early formation at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna from 1896 to 1900 and then continued her studies in Munich and Paris. In Abbazia, where doctors, merchants and hoteliers „reigned“ the town, artists had more freedom than in Vienna. On the demand of the spa management Glax designed posters and brochures from 1910 onwards and thus provided the town with a modern visual appearance. Her modern, two dimensional motifs showed the fashionable life of a booming vacation resort. The cover of the Berlin journal "Der Weltcourier", which was an illustrated lifestyle and travel magazine, published a special issue titled “Abbazia and the Austrian Riviera”, which showed the present watercolour with the view of Abbazia and the Monte Maggiore/Ucka on its cover. (see: Ausstellungskatalog Christian Rapp, Nadia Rapp-Wimberger, Österreichische Riviera, Wien entdeckt das Meer, Wien Museum 2013, p. 100, 237; Fig. p. 100.)
