The Adoration of the Shepherds Die Anbetung der Hirten, pen and brown ink, brown wash, over black chalk, on laid paper, 34,9 x 19,5 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Between 1570-1575 Luca Cambiaso executed the painting „Adoration of the Shepherds (206 x 183 cm) for the church San Domenico in Bologna; the painting is kept today in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna (Inv. 530; Suida 1958, p. 34, fig. 214). Several phases of preliminary drafts are existent: a drawing in the Graphic Collection of the Albertina Museum (Inv. Nr. 15204), one in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, another one in the British Museum in London and in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan. The present study seems to be similar with the mentioned preliminary drawings, however, an attribution to Luca Cambiaso can be excluded on stylistic comparison. The drawing may derive from an artist in the circle of Cambiaso, who was familiar with one of the drafts by Cambiaso.
