Rudolf Ribarz

Rudolf Ribarz - Dipinti a olio e acquarelli del XIX secolo

(Vienna 1848-1904)
After the Storm, oil on canvas, 103 x 160 cm, framed, (W)

Provenance:
Dorotheum Auction, Vienna, 12 March 1959, lot 107; private property, Vienna.

Catalogued in:
Martina Haja, Der Landschaftsmaler Rudolf Ribarz. Eine kritische Werksübersicht, Diss., Vienna 1976, p. 93, cat. no. 27.

Letter of authentication issued by Bruno Grimschitz, Vienna, 20 September 1959, available.

Martina Haja writes of this painting in her dissertation, p.22: “The lake in the background and the tree-covered bank are rendered in the Biedermeier style, yet the colouring of the distant thundery sky, and the idea of the cabbage field in the foreground, reveal the beginnings of the painter’s originality. The gloomy grey-blue of one half of the sky contrasts strongly with the thundery atmosphere. The elevated view of the cabbage field in the foreground, painted in broad, loose brushstokes, constitutes the first example of Ribarz’s “cabbage and beet painting” as he would later ironically call his fondness for depicting brassicas.
