Gustav Lindgren writes of this work:
“In the foreground on the right-hand side are steps leading up from the canal, at the top of which stand a group deep in conversation. In the middle the Rialto Bridge. Behind the bridge the Fondaco dei Tedeschi is visible to the right, and to the left the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi and the tower of the church of Santi Apostoli.(...) Work on the painting began in late January 1866, but due to the short, dark days, and the artist’s other commitments, it was only completed on 31 March of that year.”
