Jacques Callot Circle of
(1592–1635) An Italian farmyard, pen and brown ink, brown wash, on laid paper, framing lines in pen and brown ink, 21 x 31,5 cm, browned, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Literature:
See: Michael Jaffé, The Devonshire Collection of Northern European Drawings, Umberto Allemandi, 2002, Volume V (French Artists), Cat. 1665, 603.
The Devonshire Collection of Drawings in Chatsworth (Prints Vol. 21, 362) preserves a comparable drawing with a similar subject. In the catalogue the drawing is attributed to a follower of callot by Michael Jaffé (Jaffé 2002, Cat. 1665, p. 603: “An Italian Farmyard, 110 x 160 mm). Jaffé also mentions another comparable drawing in English private possession, which was sold as a drawing from „Callot’s circle”, December 15, 1992 at Christie’s, London (lot 161, fig. p. 603). Despite the related motifs the present drawing differs in several instances from the other two sheets. The strong chiaroscuro washes also suggest an Italian artist from the circle of Remigio Cantagallina who could have exceuted the drawing after a composition by Callot.
