Lotto No. 46

Ippolito Caffi

Ippolito Caffi - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Belluno 1809–1866 Lissa)
Rome, the Via Appia at dawn, signed Caffi, oil on canvas, 28 x 44 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection Belgium.

We are grateful to Annalisa Scarpa for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. It will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works.

The artist Ippolito Caffi studied this motif a number of times in an effort to perfect it: in a preparatory drawing in pen and watercolour (130 x 257 mm) as well as in a painting on canvas (30 x 43 cm), both preserved at the Museo Correr in Venice. The present lot is the second version of this motif in oil on canvas.
This is a particularly successful composition. It displays the artist’s accomplished technique with the exquisite distribution of figures across the pictorial space. The sunrise bathes the whole composition in warm light. The importance of this work is demonstrated by the large number of preparatory costume and figure studies collected in a notebook that is now a part of the Museo Correr’s collection.
