Lotto No. 114 -

Maria Mathilde Esch

Maria Mathilde Esch - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Brünn 1815–1904 Munich)
At the market, signed, dated M. Esch (1)849, oil on canvas, 44.5 x 60.5 cm, framed, (W)

Born in Moravia, genre painter Maria Mathilde Esch completed her artistic training with Josef von Führich in Prague, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller in Vienna and Moritz Müller in Munich. Her oeuvre mainly includes genre scenes, still lifes and landscapes. Her preferred subjects were motifs from German and Hungarian folk life, which she depicts with great sensitivity and charm.
The present lot, which shows a young lady with a typical headscarf at a market stall, the artist has dedicated to the representation of the Moravian costume. The painting was executed in 1849, thus falling into the period before her move to Vienna. In the centre, the young saleswoman in colourful costume stands out clearly from the hustle and bustle of the market. She holds a rooster in her hands and seems deep in thought. Maria Mathilde Esch manages to capture the atmosphere of the bustling market in this painting and impressively convey a snippet of her home country.
