We are grateful to Jean Luc Meulemeester, who tentatively suggested the attribution of the present painting to Jacob van Oost I on the basis of a high-resolution photograph. A comparable painting by Jan van Oost, the leading artist in seventeenth-century Bruges, is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
