Otto Brausewetter - Dipinti a olio e acquarelli del XIX secolo

(Zalewo 1835-1904 Berlin)
Charon’s Boat, oil on canvas, 30 x 61.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
German private property; A larger version of this work was sold at the Dorotheum Vienna on 21 April 2016, lot 1239. Compare: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus, 1979, Vol. I, 1, p. 140, no. 4.

Charon is the grim, aged ferryman of Greek mythology who transports the dead to the underworld of Hades. For a coin, the so-called Charon’s obol, he rows the souls of the newly deceased in his boat across the river Acheron. As well as having great appeal in the art of the ancients, this mythological story was similarly widely referenced by later painters. Otto Brausewetter depicts this scene in the style of pathetic composition, portraying an array of figures who have stoically placed themselves in the hands of the fateful ferryman.
