Lotto No. 283 -

Herman van Swanevelt

Herman van Swanevelt - Dipinti antichi II

(Woerden circa 1600–1655 Paris)
A landscape with Jacob and Rachel at the well of Haran (Genesis 29:1–13),
oil on canvas, 110 x 132 cm, framed

We are grateful to Luuk Pijl for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution photograph.

Pijl sees a strong connection to Swanevelt’s large canvases for King Philip IV of Spain and his Buen Retiro Palace. These large works were part of a huge decoration scheme approaching 200 landscape paintings in all (see G. Capitelli, The Landscapes for the Buen Retiro Palace, in: Paintings for the Planet King, Philip IV and the Buen Retiro Palace, ed. by A. de los Cobos, Madrid 2005, pp. 240–84). The present painting should be dated around 1635, given its obvious stylistic affinities to Swanevelt’s known works for the Buen Retiro Palace. It is listed in the RKD database under no. 116940 (as Dutch School, datable into the late seventeenth century).
