We are grateful to Giancarlo Sestieri for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original and for his help in cataloguing this lot.

The present painting is mentioned in the inventory of the painter Benedetto Luti compiled at the time of his death in 1724. Two paintings are listed, both depicting the subject of the Golden Age. Both are of similar measurements and described as non finiti (see M. B. Guerrieri Borsoi, La collezione di Benedetto Luti, in: Studi sul Settecento romano, no. 25, 2009, p. 93, no. 1, p. 100, no. 406). The other painting mentioned in the inventory is now in the Apolloni collection in Rome (see R. Maffeis, Benedetto Luti: l’ultimo maestro, Florence 2012, pp. 307-308, cat. no. II. 23).

Benedetto Luti was a celebrated painter in late seventeenth, early eighteenth century Rome. He was also an art dealer and collector.
