Exhibited:
Wahre Wunder, Sammler und Sammlungen im Rheinland, Köln Kunsthalle, Cat. No C 80.

The painter, etcher and draughtsman for engravings, Jonas Umbach, was active in Augsburg. From the middle of the 17th century onwards he is supposed to have been the personal painter of the Bishop of Augsburg, however, documented evidence is lacking. Umbach‘s oeuvre of drawings and prints is better known than his paintings of which only few are existing. Nagler (Monogrammisten IV, Nr. 541) mentions 172 sheets; the extended catalogue raisonné by Haas lists 247 etchings, the entire oeuvre may comprise approximately 300 sheets. The etchings mainly represent scenes from the Old and the New Testament, from the lives of saints and devotional pictures. A smaller number of landscapes and profane and mythological scenes are known as well. The present drawing may be the study for an etching by Umbach. A similar composition is preserved in an etching which represents the „Resurrection of Christ“. (12,6 x 8,5 cm; Nagler 75).
