Franz Xaver Wagenschön

Franz Xaver Wagenschön - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(Littisch 1726–1790 Vienna)
Antiochus and Stratonice; Alexander the Great and Sisygambis; the Continence of Scipio; Antiochus III and the preistess of Diana, a series of four drawings, after Pietro da Cortona, brush and grey ink, over pencil on laid paper, watermark “small horn”, 19,8 x 32,4 cm, 19,2 x 38,3 cm, 19 x 31,3 cm, 20,2 x 30,7 cm, mounted, unframed, (4), (Sch)

The present drawings may go back to four engravings by Cornelius Bloemaert (c. 1677) after frescoes by Pietro da Cortona in the Sala di Venere in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence (c. 1641) (Hollstein 224). The drawings are the mirror-inverted scenes of the last four of overall eight frescos in which Cortona painted the lifes of famous pre-Christian rulers, statesmen and early Christian heroes. The frescoes in the Sala di Venere are arranged in pairs each and ornate the lunettes below the vaults. An article in the Wiener Zeitung of 7th May 1791, no 37 mentions that Wagenschön is assumed to have possessed thousands of engravings and reproduction prints in his collection including ones after Bloemart, which served the artist as model images for his own creations.
