Private collection, Netherlands.
The present portrait study may show Jeanne-Marie “Manon” Roland La Platière who was best known as “Madame Roland”. She was a friend of Johann Ernst Heinsius and was a leading figure in the French Revolution. She was guillotined in 1793. A comparable oil painting (oil on canvas, signed, dated 1792, 67 x 53cm) is preserved in the Musée de Versailles, No. 4614.
