Lotto No. 57 -

Jan Brueghel II and Hieronymus Francken III

Jan Brueghel II and Hieronymus Francken III - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1601–1678) and (Antwerp 1611 – after 1661)
The return after the hunt,
oil on panel, 65.5 x 54.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Jan Brueghel II in collaboration with Hieronymus Francken III. A written certificate (March 2020) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘Having thoroughly examined this very well-preserved painting, I am convinced that it was executed by the Flemish painters Jan Brueghel II and Hieronymus Francken III at the beginning of the 1630s, with Brueghel having contributed the landscape, the animals, and the objects and Francken the four nymphs in the left background.

The figure painter Hieronymus Francken stood entirely in the tradition of the Francken family and its most famous representative, Frans Francken the Younger, whose son Hieronymus was. The few known paintings assigned to him mostly deal with Christian and mythological themes whose figures easily compare to those to be assessed here.’
