The present drawing is comparable with a study for „Young Tobias introducing Archangel Raphael to his father Tobit“ in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem (Inv. Nr. O 058, pen and brown ink, grey wash, 17,4 x 19,7 cm). The drawing in Haarlem was originally attributed to David Vinckboons, but may derive from an artist of the immediate circle of Ambrosius Francken (1544–1618), who was a painter and also a designer of engravings in Antwerp from 1570 onwards. Just like the present drawing, the study in Haarlem shows similarly concise outlines and soft washes exceuted in brush and grey ink; the parallel hatchings in pen and brown ink which can be found in numerous drawings of Francken (see M. Schapelhouman, Tekeningen van Noord- en Zuidnederlandse kunstenaars geboren voor 1600, Amsterdam Historisch Museum, 1979, No. 22, p. 47) are however missing. Like the sheet in the Teylers Museum the present drawing may have been executed in preparation for an engraving belonging to a series which is depicting the story of Lot and his family.
