The renowned studio founded by Carlo Brioschi (18261-1995), Johann Kautsky (1827-1896) and Hermann Burghart (1834-1901) was known above all under the name “Brioschi, Burghart and Kautsky, Imperial & Royal Court Theatre painters in Vienna.” They specialised in decorative theatre painting and received commissions both within Austria and from abroad. Many artists and professionals from the applied arts sector found employment in their studio.
The present lot probably originates from the private studio of Hermann Burghart, who became the third co-owner of the company in 1866. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was appointed as theatre painter to the Court Opera House.
