On the Horse Race Track, indistinctly signed, dated and inscribed Emil Volkers 1862 Ddf., oil on canvas, 60 x 120 cm, framed
The exact location of the depicted racetrack is a conundrum: the red-white-blue flag might refer to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Nassau from 1868 onwards.
If, the blue area at the horizon is in fact the silhouette of the
Taunus, the place could be Frankfurt. In any case, dating the work to 1862 places it at the beginning of Volker’s career as an artist specialising in equine subjects.
In this painting, not only the noble racehorses, but also their jockeys and the gentlemen in the audience are finely characterised.
