Domenicus (Ascanius) van Wijnen
(Amsterdam 1658–1700)
The Golden Age (Bacchanale),
oil on canvas, 56.4 x 74.3 cm, framed
Provenance:
sale, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 6 November 2001, lot 26;
Private collection, South Germany
The present painting is registered at the RKD database under no. 00035946.
The present canvas with its multitude of vivacious, intertwined and fantastic figures, is a typically dramatic work from the hand of Domenicus van Wijnen. Van Wijnen has developed the Aetas Aurea, or Golden Age theme, popular in northern painting, when the gods walked among mortals into a Bacchic feast, rapt with dancing, drinking and love-making.
Training with Willem Doudijn’s in the Hague, van Wijnen was active in Rome from 1680-90. There he was a member of the raucous and mysterious Bentvueghels, a brotherhood of northern painters centred the then ‘red-light district’ of the area around Santa Maria del Popolo and who also held Bacchic rites in the mausoleum of Santa Constanza. Famed also for his depictions of witchcraft, the unearthly twilight here articulates the nude forms of the satys and the heroically posed gods and statues.
