Provenance:
Collector’s mark of the collection Nicos Dhikeos (1896-1987), Lyon and Cyprus, Lugt 3529;
collection Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome.

The present drawing is related to the painting of the same theme in the chapel of San Domenico Soriano in the church S. Domenico in Lucera, Puglia. The composition is iconographically widely in accordance with the present drawing and may have been executed in preparation for the painting or a version after it. The painting cannot be ascribed to Massimo Stanzione himself, but may have been executed by a collaborator or a successor of the artist. For the painting see: S. Schutze/Th.
