Guillaume Courtois (Guglielmo Cortese), Circle of,

Guillaume Courtois (Guglielmo Cortese), Circle of, - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(1628–1679)
A study for Venus and Adonis (recto), a priest holding a vessel with holy water and a young man holding a bowl (verso), red chalk on laid paper, 35 x 26,5 cm, with a central crease, browned, stained, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome.

The study of the priest on the reverse of the sheet may have been inspired by the figure of Aaron in the side fresco “The Sacrifice of Aaron” by Guillaume Courtois in the Capella del SS. Sacramento in S. Marco in Rome (1658–59). The frescos were part of the Baroque decoration of the church which were commissioned by the Doge Niccolò Sagredo. A complete study for the fresco is preserved in Düsseldorf (Inv. FP 14140; comp. D. Graf, Die Handzeichnungen von Guglielmo Cortese und Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Düsseldorf 1976, Vol. II, Cat. 3.) Another overall design is kept in Windsor Castle (RL 6795, comp. Blunt/Cooke, The Roman Drawings of the VII and XVIII Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle, London 1960, p. 32, fig. 14).
