Mauro Gandolfi, attributed to, - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(1764–1834) Head studies of five young women, after Gaetano Gandolfi, pen and brown ink, on paper, 19,5 x 29 cm, laid down on an old collector’s mount, browned, minutely stained, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private property, Austria.

The present study with five female heads goes back to a drawing which was originally attributed to Mauro Gandolfi and in 1994 was identified as a drawing by the artist’s father Gaetano Gandolfi (D. Biagi Maino, ‘Gaetano Gandolfi’s “capricci” of heads: drawings and engravings’, in: The Burlington Magazine, CXXXVI, June 1994, p. 378, fig. 57). The drawing was engraved by Luigi Tadolini (1758–1823) and was published and numbered 17 within a series titled “Raccolta di Teste pittoriche inventate e disegnate a penna dal Sig. G. Gandolfi Accademico Clementino ed incise in rame da Luigi Tadolini” comprising 20 sheets. The present drawing whose mount carries an old attribution to Francesco Bartolozzi may be a copy of Mauro after a drawing of his father Gaetano Gandolfi. Both sheets are in accordance with each other except for a few minor details such as the hatchings and the expression in the eyes. The present copy may have been executed in order to practice the manner of Gaetano’s model in the early period of Mauro’s artistic career.

The attribution to Mauro Gandolfi was suggested by Dr. Marco Riccòmini on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
