Sebastian Wegmayr - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Vienna 1776–1857)
A Sumptuous Bouquet of Flowers with a Butterfly and Blue Tit, signed S. Wegmayr, oil on panel, 73 x 52 cm, framed

The Viennese flower painter Sebastian Wegmayr entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at a young age and was closely associated with it until his death. He was first given the role of Corrector at the Manufakturzeichenschule in 1807 before, in 1812, he was appointed Professor of Flower Painting. He held this position until his retirement in 1851.
His preferred subjects were opulent floral pieces, which he usually composed on the basis of numerous individual studies and sample sheets. His Biedermeier flower bouquets are characterised by a fine, meticulous style of painting and precise contouring of the individual blossoms. He typically placed these magnificent bouquets of flowers in front of an inconspicuous landscape background or in a semicircular stone niche, as in the present lot, with the lush floral arrangement set off well by the contrasting background. A butterfly on the upper left and a blue tit on the lower right add a dash of life to the
depiction. (JP)
